Is it May already? Where did the time go? I can hear the rain falling outside the window as I type, that sound would lead me to think it is still April.

So, what do we celebrate in May besides the “flowers”? How about Mothers! Let’s celebrate mothers of all creatures, Dog Moms, Cat Moms, Horse Moms… you get the point. A mother doesn’t have to have human children to be appreciated on Mother’s Day or any time of year for that matter.

I am a very grateful Dog Mom. Our black lab Harley brings a lot of joy to our lives and fills a void for Steve and I because we do not have two-legged children. We are middle-aged, having “kids” is no longer a possibility so God brought us the Gift of our animal companions.

Olive, my inspiration for Pet Perennials and Harley, my “heart” dog are the manifestation of God’s Gift of life. He knew that I needed them.

I found Olive stranded on the side of the road on a cold, dark night in November 2005 and was blessed with her for seven years. Harley came into mine and Steve’s life in 2015 at Pet Perennials first event - a fundraiser for a local animal shelter. That day two, energetic puppies found their way into my booth, climbed on top of me and licked my face. My heart melted, then I thought, not two!

I went about my business. By the end of the day, one of the puppies had been adopted. That was great news for the little fella, but it left the sibling. She would have had to return to the shelter without her crate companion. The idea broke my heart so I stopped at the Animal Rescue League’s table and asked if I could adopt the remaining puppy. “Harley” has been at my side ever since. She is a spokes-dog for Pet Perennials when she wants to be!  She brings lots of joy, tenderness and laughter to our lives.

I composed the following poem called Three Promises to accompany our Three Promises Pawprint & Celtic Knot Keychain. I suppose it is my interpretation of what it means to be a Dog Mom.

Happy Mother’s Day! (all month long)

Remy

THREE PROMISES
When you came into my life, I made a choice to give you a home.
Gratefully, you wiggled your way into my heart.
I made three promises: to love, to honor and to protect you.
As time passed, I realized you didn’t get to choose me.
You were divinely created to be my companion.
Instinctively, you have fulfilled each of these promises for me.
