Please tell us about your company and what role(s) you play.
Canine Country Club is a pet resort where your pet can be on vacation too! My name is Dashia Stauffer and along with my husband Cody, and my parents Gary & Kim Buchen, own and operate our two resort locations.
How and when did you start your business? Was it inspired by a pet?
My mother Kim Buchen had a passion for dogs and making a safe, loving place for them when they couldn’t be with their family! She started Canine Country Club in 1991, with inspiration from her sweet Siberian Husky puppy, Chelsea.
Do you have a pet(s) that joins you at work, what are their names and roles?
YES! Our newest location built in 2018, is named after our special boy Windsor. He loves to come along to his dog house and visit his friends at “The Windsor,” and help us give tours to people. Our latest addition Hinckley, is a one-year old golden retriever. His favorite activity at work is showing off both the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and how he dives in after his beloved tennis ball!
What makes your business or brand unique?
Our motto at Canine Country Club is D.O.G. - Depend on God! Gary & Kim started the business at their home almost 30 years ago in the family’s modest 4-car garage. In the years that followed, many happy dogs and customers allowed us to continue to add on many times and build our first location into what we now call “The Club.” Soon, we started running out of room at The Club and decided it was time to make our dream come true with a second, brand-new location! After five years of planning and praying, we built “The Windsor,” a custom designed luxury resort featuring all of our own ideas and knowledge of dogs and their needs. We firmly believe that our motto has inspired us to grow, and be a blessing to the dogs and people in our community.
How does your business help other pet lovers like you?
We believe that the energy outlet and socialization at our facility can help make our dogs well rounded and better behaved at home and away! We also hold social events for clients to join with their dogs too, which is one of my favorites!
What have been some of your biggest challenges in running your business? How did you overcome them?
I would say caring for the dogs has been the easy and fun part! The most challenging part is learning how people communicate and clearly sharing what we do with our clients. It’s very important for us to build the trust level between our staff and our clients. Our dogs can only speak through their actions when they go home, so our goal is to make sure that we have happy dogs going home to let mom & dad know how great their stay was!
What qualities have made you successful or do you feel are important for inspiring leaders?
Humility & love… learning to love people and step back, listen and be kind no matter how some people can be. Also, a model I have taught my staff… in the midst of a busy day remember ONE DAY AT A TIME, ONE DOG AT A TIME. I hope our staff can take this model and use it in every day life even when they move on from CCC.
What cool things are you/your business working on that you would like to share? New product or service? Podcast or training series?
I think the most fun thing we have been doing is our themed parties throughout the year that we include our clients with. Anything from “Doggie Date Night”, “Winter Wonderland”, “Bark to School”, & “Thanksgiving Feast”. It is a huge hit and we love getting to know the people that make the dogs who they are!
