Tips for Working from Home with Pets

5 Ways to Become a Digital Nomad With Your Cat or Dog by Cindy Aldridge

Becoming a digital nomad with your pet by your side is probably appealing if you love pets. After all, having your pet accompanying you would be great as you explore new places and make new friends. But is that feasible? It can be, but there are some things you'll need to remember. Here are five tips to help you start your journey.

1. Find a Way to Work Online

You can find work online if you have a skill that allows you to work from home. As long as you have a laptop and an internet connection, you can work from anywhere. If you're unsure what type of work you want, plenty of online resources are available to help narrow down your options.

2. Find Pet-Friendly Accommodations

Finding accommodations can be tricky with pets. Many websites list pet-friendly rentals, so start there. Another option is to find short-term rentals, such as Airbnb listings. Many hosts accept pets, so it's worth asking.

3. Save on Expenses With Travel Hacking

To travel cheaply, learn how to travel hack! Travel hacks are methods that help digital nomads save on travel expenses. Here are a few examples:

  • Sign up for work stays. Stay on someone's property in exchange for a few hours of work per day.
  • Become a house sitter. Stay in someone's house while they're away. Watch their pets, water their plants, and keep an eye on the place in exchange for accommodation.
  • Use airline mileage points. Sign up for rewards cards and use earned points to book free or discounted flights.

There are many other ways to save money while traveling. Do your research and find the methods that work best for you.

4. Keep Your Pet Healthy

Like you, your pet needs to stay healthy while on the road. You'll need to keep your pet healthy with updated vaccinations, routine checkups, any medications, and flea and tick preventatives

It's wise to buy pet insurance. It’s simply the best way to keep your pet heathly. Look beyond the policy price to worldwide coverage, provider reputation, and what it covers. It might be cheaper to sign up for insurance in your home city before you depart.

5. Keep Your Pet From Interfering With Your Work

It's difficult to talk to clients or attend online meetings if your pet constantly interrupts you. To stay productive:

  • Designate a work area for yourself. Don't allow your pet in that space.
  • Keep your pet occupied with toys. Some pets may enjoy looking out windows or lying in the sunlight.
  • Schedule breaks throughout the day. Keep a routine so your pet knows when it's time to play and when it's time to work.

Working from home with a pet can be challenging, but it's doable with some planning and effort.

Enjoy Freedom With Your Furry Friend

Don't forget that the whole point of becoming a digital nomad is to have an adventure, so don't stress too much about the logistics. Plan well, then just enjoy the experience with your furry friend by your side.
